Program
How do ethno-racial inequalities present themselves in culture and media?
Over the past 10 years, four professors at the Erasmus School of History, Culture, and Communication (ESHCC) have dedicated their research to investigate how diverse forms of ethno-racial inequalities present themselves in the culturally relevant fields of media, music, and sports. Their findings uncover implicit ways that structures of inequality and privilege manifest in our everyday lives as well as in places where diverse groups of people come together and interact.
We invite you to the workshop “Deconstructing the Norm,” in which we present the findings of this research. The workshop addresses socially constructed norms and stereotypes that shape how individuals think, affecting the structures of not only our cultural, but also our digital experiences. It aims to raise awareness and empower participants to think critically about contemporary media and heritage practices.
We will, for example, think about where we get our news – do you actively seek it out? Does news just come to you? Presupposed digital practices shape our social realities and impact the way we think about social topics. Current increases in political polarization can be considered a result of this. Let’s investigate further how dominant perceptions and arguments of biased nature become normalized.
The workshop will be given by Sophie Sasse lecturer and researcher at the Erasmus School of History, Culture, and Communication, who developed the program together with dr. Jacco van Sterkenburg, dr. Julian Schaap, dr. Amanda Paz Alencar and dr. Pauwke Berkers
