Going independent: why and how state museums became more independent is an examination of the circumstances in which Dutch state museums gained independence from direct steering by the national government between 1987 and 1995. At the time, this was a remarkable process to be encountered nowhere else. The report is based on interviews that Manus Brinkman, former director of the Dutch Museums Association, held with various main and supporting players involved.
