Sixteen lecturers affiliated with the Faculty Visual Art and Design of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) will be participating in a concentrate introductory programme in June with the focus on the meaning of cultural heritage. The faculty aspires to an increased level of knowledge about documentation and storytelling, and issues of preservation and management.

Dutch & Indonesian Design
Most of the ITB participants come from the research group Visual Communication and Multimedia and from the programme Visual Communication Design. Other participants come from the research groups such as human and interior, product design, industry and traditions and art history. They are searching for a more personal signature in the design of products or services produced in Indonesia, moving towards ‘Indonesian Design’.

Indonesian source materials with a high cultural heritage character and cultural-historic and/or anthropological context are increasingly being used. An example might be Ikat motifs from Borneo and Batik patterns and colour schemes in order to design new typography or Wayang figures or iconography from Borobudur or Prambanan for the design of computer games, fashion or furniture.

During this teacher training, museological processes are examined of, among other things, (de)selection, appraisal, collection development, preservation and (digital) management, (passive) conservation and information management. The lecturers get a better grip on heritage-related strategies with attention paid to communication, cultural entrepreneurship, sustainability and cooperation. In this way, a responsible transition towards contemporary design and applications can be made.

As a result of the collections in the Netherlands originating from Indonesia and the world-famous Dutch Design, they come into contact with each other once again. Ultimately, the role of the diversity of cultures, documents, traditions and heritage will support and strengthen the Indonesian creative industries.
