HISTORIC HOUSES WITHIN THE CONTEMPORARY HERITAGE DISCOURSE

A CASE STUDY OF CASTRUM PEREGRINI IN AMSTERDAM

What is the history of Castrum Peregrini? What created the institution that we encounter today? How does the Foundation Castrum Peregrini position itself in relation to its own history; to the heritage field in general? What activities do they initiate at the moment and how do they label them? Is it possible to compare them to the traditional museum functions? What is the professional discourse around historic houses and how is it related to Castrum Peregrini? Finally, what value does the legacy of Castrum Peregrini have to its vision? In other words, how is the heritage of the house used by the Foundation? At the end by comparing this particular example with some established historic house museums we will be able to identify the alternative ways of working with build heritage. Moreover it will help reach the final goal of this research: to outline the strategies for historic houses that have potential to become an institutionalized part of national heritage by estimating its power and responsibility towards society in general.
