Street Values

Changing practices of heritage-making in public space are researched in the Street Values project on the basis of examples and conceptual reflections. “The Street Values research project has provided insight in how we view and interpret the so-called socialization of heritage”, says Professor and Project Manager Riemer Knoop.

Heritage- & placemaking
At a time of bottom-up, participation, diversity and more socially sustainable qualities in our living environment, the researchers recognize an expanding importance of new, more participatory and sustainable practices dealing with heritage and public space. Knoop: ”Considered from a ‘sustainist’ cultural perspective, these seem more successful as they become increasingly socially embedded and provide a realm for pluriformity in values and participants. This imposes new demands on heritage professionals.”

The Street Values project puts emphasis on how heritage can be perceived as a social design challenge rather than than an object or location to be preserved. This shows how the practice of heritage-making is changing in the living environment:  heritage becomes more inclusive, is more interconnected to social actors and is more closely attuned to the values of local communities. This has consequences for the education of heritage professionals.

ACIN
Street Values takes the form of a series of multi-day workshops and expert meetings with a broad group of researchers and players from the heritage domain. The project, led by the Reinwardt Academy in collaboration with the Research Group Play and Civic Media (HvA), Gordion Cultural Advise and Sustainism Lab is partly made possible thanks to the education innovation programme Amsterdam Creative Industries Network (ACIN).

ACIN (Amsterdam Creative Industries Network) is a Centre of Expertise and was founded by the University of Applied Sciences, the Inholland Academy and the Amsterdam University of the Arts. Professors and researchers of these universities are closely involved in the labs. The research and applications are very relevant and of a high standard due to this expertise and the link with leading companies.

2015-2016
In the initial phase an exploration of definitions was carried out, by making use of concrete practice cases:  placemaking (Knowledge Mile), commons (Cruquius-waterfront in Amsterdam East) and co-design (Wildemanbuurt in Amsterdam West). It was reported in an interim publication.

2017-2018
In the second phase of the project three practice situations are being researched at the request of the interested parties. Which are:

  • the link between art programming of the Oude Kerk and its surroundings (Amsterdam, red-light district),
  • the transferability of the concept of Story House Belvédère (Rotterdam) and
  • the concrete implementation of the culture-societal core values of Binckhorst Area (The Hague) in the transition to a metropolitan residential and working area.

The insights from this research are shared with Monuments and Archeology of the City of Amsterdam and provide input in the knowledge agenda of the Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE). Consultations are ongoing with housing corporation Stadsgenoot regarding adaptive re-use of a monumental building in Amsterdam North. Master students Public Administration of the Faculty of Social Sciences (VU) study the new forms of participation which are addressed in Street Values.

The Council for Culture and the Council for the Environment and Infrastructure referred to the Street Values research in a recent opinion (December 2018). This is an example of changing attitudes and behaviours (“from collection to connection”) which the heritage sector needs to manage transitions in the area of climate, energy, demography and governance.
